Unboxing the magic of FairyLoot

When FairyLoot, a beloved fantasy book subscription service, approached us to redesign their website, it was a super exciting opportunity for us to craft an immersive online experience to truly reflect their magical brand.

The brief clearly stated ‘go beyond functionality’ —it had to resonate with their passionate, fantasy-loving audience. With this in mind, we set out to create a digital platform that would not only engage but equally foster a sense of community and adventure.

Objectives and Scope

FairyLoot were primarily seeking to enhance the digital experience and build a community-driven website. The previous site lacked the aesthetics and functionality required to capture the magic of the brand. Our goal was to craft a captivating platform that would be both user-friendly and enchanting.

Design Process: Crafting a Magical Journey

Beginning with a detailed discovery phase, we collaborated to examine the competitive landscape and identify ways to make FairyLoot stand out as a sophisticated fantasy brand. From here, we produced a detailed design brief. In essence the creative needed to incorporate a visually enchanting experience with a focus on ease of navigation.

Key Features of the Design:

  • Custom Iconography: Unique icons aligned with the fantasy theme to make the brand memorable.
  • Magical Cursor: A standout feature that added a magical touch to the user experience.
  • Mega Menu: Simplified navigation, allowing users to easily access content.
  • Colour Refinement: Improved color contrast to make call-to-action buttons stand out.

We also developed detailed brand guidelines, social media templates, and updated their newsletter, FairyScoop Magazine, to align with the new digital identity.

Development Approach: Building a Future-Proof Platform

Technically, we chose to stay with WordPress and WooCommerce. 

This way we could preserve existing user data and orders while optimising the platform for performance.

Technical Solutions and Features:

  • Dynamic Quiz: Created with Vue.js, the quiz helps users find the right subscription, offering personalized outcomes.
  • Custom Hooks for WooCommerce: Tailored WooCommerce features while ensuring future stability.
  • Reviews.io Integration: Showcased real user feedback, building trust with new customers.
  • Bookshelf Feature: Allowed users to track their orders and subscriptions, enhancing engagement.

We also optimised performance with caching and media optimisation, ensuring fast load times, and added two-factor authentication (2FA) for security.

Collaboration Between Design and Development

Close collaboration between the design and development teams ensured the final product matched the vision. The animations, custom cursor, and interactive elements were carefully tested to deliver a thoroughly on brand and immersive experience.
