Drone filming, once exclusive to professional filmmakers and agencies, has undergone a transformative shift. Due to the growing accessibility and affordability of drones, a new generation of amateur drone photographers and videographers has emerged, sparking a new wave of creatives and influencers.
After months of thought, Andrew, Framework’s own talented Mid-Weight Designer, decided to finally take the plunge, and buy a drone for himself…
Why did you decide to start drone filming and photography?
This is an interesting one for me as it kind of came out of the blue. Photography and videography has always been an interest of mine but, I was scrolling through Instagram one day and came across a photographer/videographer called Zac Watson. I loved the way he created his short-form travel videos and, as the algorithm works, one video led to another so I continued to see similar creators. I had to try it out for myself, so before I knew it I had bought myself a drone!
What drone do you use?
The drone I decided to buy was the DJI Mini 3 Pro. The reviews seemed good and if I was going to dive into this new hobby, I wanted to go all out!
How long have you been flying for?
I bought my drone back in April 2023 and ever since then, I have taken up every opportunity to learn more about cinematography, filmmaking and improve on my drone flying skills.
How often do you get the chance to film?
I try my best to get out every weekend, but it’s very weather-dependent so there are a lot less opportunities during these winter months
Where is the best place you’ve filmed?
So far, the best place I have filmed would have to be the Peak District. I’ve flown my drone above Winnats Pass, Damflask Reservoir and Mam Tor. The rolling hills, dramatic edges and open water make it an enjoyable place to experiment with shots and flying techniques.
Where’s next on your list of places to visit?
A place I really want to visit has to be Maderia. Its unique, natural landscape lends itself to some amazing flying opportunities. I’ve seen so many cool drone shots taken there so it would be nice to travel and create some of my own!
Any plans for the future?
I just want to keep learning, learning, and learning. I’ve been enjoying the process so far, from basic drone piloting to understanding more about the art of filmmaking and Cinematography. Combining this with travel will hopefully open up many opportunities to further develop my skills in different environments, whilst exploring new places at the same time!
